DNS spoofing

DNS Spoofing is a MITM (Men-in-the-Middle) technique to send incorrect DNS information to the host. The end user thinks he is on the intended landing page with all possible consequences.

What are the risks of DNS spoofing?

DNS spoofing is often used by hackers to steal credit card details and/or account information from unsuspecting users. The hacker can also install malware with a drive-by download or cause a DoS (Denial of Service).

How can you protect yourself against DNS spoofing?

  • Make sure your DNS server is up to date and use DNS best-practices configuration
  • Provide a separate and secure DNS server for public and internal services such as Infoblox
  • Use 802.1.x Network Access Control for the internal network to prevent internal (ARP) spoofing
  • Use DNSSEC
