Botnet and rootkit
A botnet is a collection of computers connected to the Internet without the legitimate users being aware of it.
What are the risks of a Botnet?
A Botnet is used for various activities, such as spreading spam and viruses and carrying out a Denial-of-Service attack. A computer that has been hit by a botnet is called a zombie. A botnet is able to perform an action on many (think of 100,000+) different computers at the same time.
How can you protect yourself against a botnet?
A botnet is a link in a hacking attempt. The possibility of intrusion via a hack must therefore be prevented as much as possible. However, a botnet can also be killed at various places in the network.
- Use current antivirus and end-point security software
- Set up a Next Generation Firewall or Intrusion Prevention System that can recognize botnet traffic at the edge of the network and stop it before it communicates outside.
- Use Advanced Malware Protection technology that can recognize botnet infection at the earliest possible stage
- Make use of DNS security features where botnet communication is stopped inside the network or data center
